I had my first lobster roll yesterday.
I never liked lobster until I experienced the Lobster Parfait at Hugo's.
And now I crave it night and day.
I order it wherever I go - as long as it is out of the shell. I don't actually like it enough to work for it.
I was down at the dock the other day, reading the paper and I overheard an old couple talking about lobster rolls. Describing the perfect lobster roll from the Town Landing in detail. Excruciating, mouth watering detail.
All I could think about was lobster. It was overwhelming.
So my husband and I went to the Dry Dock, a local, laid back, unpretentious restaurant in the Old Port, figuring they would have a "non touristy" version of the lobster roll.
Oh, it was good! I'm not sure how good because I have nothing to compare it to. But it was melt in your mouth good.
The hot dog bun was buttered and toasted to perfection.
The lobster meat was knuckle and claw.
The mayo was served on the side which I found a little odd. The waitress said that often out-of-towners want butter(!) and not mayo. Amateurs! I slathered on the mayo and ohhhhh....soooo gooood.
I went back to work and could think of nothing but lobster. I am now in search of the perfect lobster roll.
Suggestions anyone?

Update: I tried a lobster roll at Kettle Cove Take Out in Cape Elizabeth. An "order at the window & sit on a picnic table" kind of place. I had high hopes, but was disappointed. Unlike the Dry Dock, the bun wasn't buttered before toasting. The lobster was too cold so you couldn't taste the flavor. The lobster and mayo were pre-mixed; additional mayo would have made it a bit less dry. Low on the list of lobster roll nirvana, but the onion rings were outstanding!
