Where can you find the best sushi in Portland? According to your votes Yosaku is the winner, garnering 29% of the votes in my recent poll. Newcomer Food Factory Miyake trailed a close second, earning 25% of the votes from their loyal neighborhood fans.
Long time Portland favorites, Sapporo and Benkay took 15% and 13% of the votes respectively. King of the Roll (9%), Fuji (4%) and Ginza Town (2%)trailed the pack. No love was shown for either Shokudo Teriyaki or Whole Foods Sushi Bar.
I don't get the hype around Miyake, but given your votes, perhaps I'll give them another try. Six months ago, I, too, would have voted Yosaku #1 in Portland for sushi, but recent visits revealed jacked-up prices and fish quality that has gone down hill fast. I've been to Benkay a half dozen times over the past couple of months, finding consistently fresh fish, pleasant decor and decent service.
Thanks to all who participated in the poll.
Happy New Year and Bon Appetit!

I'm a fan of Yosaku, but I was one of those who voted for Miyake. I've been encouraging people to try it since my first taste of the food. There are some tricks to eating there, however. It's best to go with the specials, as these are more often in stock, and also tend to showcase the chef's continental cooking techniques (he worked for David Bouley, once upon a time). The freshness of the fish is outstanding - as in a flight of five different salmons - and the artistry in presentation is top notch - an Italian-style carpaccio over field greens of a fish which was as close to fine beef as anything I've had. I rarely hear chefs rave about another's food (respect, yes - rave, no), but Miyake has brought out full raves from number of Portland's best chefs, and most serious foodies. Can't wait to go again.
I've been a recent fan of King of the Roll... I have a friend who lived with a sushi chef in NYC for years, and he raves about both the freshness and the professional preparation there. (I'm personally a big fan of the Tako salad there, perfectly spicy octopus and seaweed with sesame, etc...)
Great blog! Someone sent me a link today and I'm trying to catch up on posts.
I am a loyal Benkay fan! Chef Ando, Kim and ChiSun are the nicest and most welcoming people I have ever met. The food quality is consistent and very good and it is such a relaxing place to visit. I have snet many friends there and every one has said the food and service is the best!
