Johnny's Bistro - Falmouth, Maine

Johnny Robinson has re-opened his former Finch's Restaurant as Johnny's Bistro &
Bar
. Located at the end of a strip mall on Route 1 in Falmouth, the Bistro looks much the same inside as Finch's did, though a few updates have been made. The bar has been extended and now seats ten; new paint, a new wall mural, and black table cloths covered with butcher paper complete the look.

Much to my husband's dismay, new chairs were not part of the renovation, though they surely should have been; the chairs are small, old and wobbly. He learned from prior visits to Finch's that looking around for a more stable and comfortable chair was a fruitless activity. Robinson has never put much stock in chairs; when he owned Hugo's, the chairs were just as uncomfortable. Johnny is hoping to replace the chairs at his bistro soon, but needs to raise money to pay for them - and the interior updates he has already done. To that end, for a limited time he is selling $1,250 worth of gift certificates for $1,000 as a means of infusing cash into the restaurant.

We dined at Johnny's a week after they re-opened. Though the bistro is supposed to be a casual, "drop in" kind of place, I made reservations in advance. It's a good thing I did, because the restaurant was packed with a mostly older crowd when we arrived at 7pm. It seems that restaurant openings - and re-openings - are always eagerly awaited in southern Maine, especially when they happen in the doldrums of winter.

Johnny showed us to our table and we were soon greeted by our waitress who took our drink order. My husband ordered a Guinness - which they had - though the waitress suggested a Boddingtons instead. He took her suggestion and was glad he did; although it is a pale ale, the large head was almost as creamy as a Guinness Stout.

A platter containing cubed foccacia bread and olive oil was presented for us to enjoy as we perused the menu. My pet peeve about Finch's has carried over to Johnny's - the rationing of their excellent bread! Under the Finch's name, if two people were dining, three paper thin slices of soda bread were dolled out; bread refills were never offered. At Johnny's, the rule of thumb appears to be five tiny cubes of foccacia bread for two people to share. The bread is made on-premise and just like the soda bread, the foccacia was fantastic. Forget the discounted gift certificates - they should sell their bread to increase cash flow.

The updated bistro menu features seven appetizers, five small plates, three salads and four entrees. The night we dined they had an additional appetizer and small plate special. Prices are moderate, with appetizers under $10 and small plates and entrees in the low and high teens respectively.

We ordered the shrimp with curry pan sauce ($8), the chevre and caramelized onion tart ($12) and the Moroccan chicken pie ($13) to share as our appetizers. All three were delivered to the table at once and it became quickly apparent why. The waitstaff seem to be intent on turning over the tables as expediently as possible. Pacing of the meal is quick at Johnny's - which could be a good thing if you're trying to catch a movie - but not so great when you're seeking a relaxing dining experience.

Plump shrimp and sauteed onions, smothered in a perfectly balanced curry pan sauce was our first - and best taste - of the evening. This dish was divine! Unfortunately the same could not be said for the other two dishes. The tart consisted of a buttery crust topped with sweet, caramelized onions and melted chevre. It was rather ordinary, and oddly presented - framed by four overcooked carrot sticks. The Moroccan chicken pie had a flaky phyllo dough, but the shredded chicken filling was dry. An odd pairing of fruit chutney tasted like it was made with pears, though the waitress would not confirm what fruit was used when asked. Regardless, it did nothing to enhance the dish.

The entrees were immensely disappointing. "Crispy" salmon was dressed with a much too sweet honey vermouth pan sauce ($18). Lukewarm lentils and overcooked carrots accompanied the fish. My husband's baked haddock was doused with a Dijon cream sauce ($18). Not only did he suffer from the same lukewarm sides, but his fish was barely warm. Unfortunately, our server was waiting on too many tables; she did not check back at all during our meal to offer drink refills or to see if the food was properly cooked and to our liking.

Our server either assumed that we were not interested in dessert, or was under pressure to turn the table. In either case, I had to ask to hear about the desserts. Three sweet treats were offered that evening - creme brulee, chocolate mousse and "Johnny's Famous Sherry Trifle." We opted to share the trifle ($7) which consisted of layers of pound cake, custard, raspberries, strawberries and whipped cream. Unfortunately, this dessert is made with frozen berries which, when thawed, have a soggy consistency. For $7 I would have expected much more from this dessert than the tasteless creation that was presented.

When I first heard that Finch's would be transformed into a causal restaurant, I thought it was fantastic idea. I imagined that Johnny would go back to his Irish heritage and create a casual neighborhood pub - with simple, but well executed quality fare. Minutes from our house, my husband and I (and soon little companion) could enjoy a meal on nights I didn't feel like cooking, or driving into Portland. Unfortunately, Johnny's has simplified American cuisine in way that is on par with banquet fare - bland, unimaginative, and quickly dished out. Unless he transforms the restaurant space into a bread bakery, I won't be returning.

I ate there when it was Finches....TOTALLY unimpressed while Johnny ran around the place like it was the BEST dining experience ever. I wouldn't even bother to go to the "new" bistro.

I used to work for Johnny and his ex-wife at Hugo's. In fact, the eponymous Hugo himself once locked me in the walk-in. Johnny is a really nice guy, and I'd like to see him do well. it's too bad he didn't take a different route here.

WE USED TO LOVE HIS HUGO'S RESTAURANT.
I do not know what happen when he moved.
He had one good chef when he first opened Finch's. Then it went down hill.
Hard time to be operating a restaurant these days.
From your review it seems that it would be hard to try it, when we did not enjoy it before.

Anyone been to COCKEYED GULL on Peaks?
The Chef Mel Alexx has made some slight changes in the menu. They have started a $10.00 specials
in addition to standard menu.
Went last night and Had a shrimp scampie with side salad and my wife had a pasta dish with mushrooms, duck, and truffels with side salad.
Heck of a deal and were very good.

Thanks for this review! Funny today we received our "postcard" from Johnny's Bistro regarding the transformation for them. One thing very important to us is not to be rushed. That fact alone would prevent us from trying out their new menu.

Six of us ate at Johnny's last night and we all had fabulous meals. Three had the lamb shank and found it very tasty. I had the haddock and did not find it "doused" in dijon sauce but it had just enough to add to the flavor of the perfectly cooked fish. All entrees were hot and delicious. We lingered for quite awhile talking over the wine and did not feel rushed, even though the restaurant was full. We'll definitely be going back for more.

My best friend and I ate at Johnnys on Valentines night. Our husbands were out to sea so we decided to be each others dates. I must say I was far from impressed. I had made a reservation which was good, our table was ready right when we came in. We sat down ordered a bottle of Champagne and got started on the night. We had about 2 min to look at the menu when our server came over to take our order. We had not even taken a sip of our drink. After I had stated that we will need more time the waiter left. He was not pleased! Finally he came back to take our order... at this point I was so upset that I just ordered our appetizer. He was very upset. The sweet potato fries came out.. they were wonderful ($6) however I wish we had more.. we honestly got 10 ff.. not many at all! We had finally ordered our Meals, I got the Special, The Scallops, I had 3 on my plate for 20$ and my best friend had the Lamb Shank. The meals were very good however we did not get a big bang for the buck. I was hoping for great meals but we did not. Not only that but we were getting ready to pay and still had champagne left in the bottle. The server looked at the bottle and dumped the rest of it out in the bucket! I could not believe my eyes! I was so upset we just paid and left! I WILL NEVER GO BACK! I would much rather go to the Front Room, Vignola or Davids. The atmosphere is the same but the food and service is MUCH MUCH better!

This is one of my Favorite places to eat in Greater Portland. The chef is amazing, cooked em the best steak I have ever eaten. They combine unique flavors for a delightful experience. Would eat there 7 days a week.

Won't be going to Johnny's soon, he got rid of the wonderful chef. Bad idea. We used to go for the fabulous lamb shank. Those mashed potatoes were to die for!

Would never go back. Ate there a few weeks ago and the food was very basic and unimaginative. I had the hanger, and my wife had the haddock. I've had better meals at subway, and since there is one across the street, that's where I will be going from now on. Horrid sides with our meal, underdone lentils of all things, and while I like brussels, the side that came with my steak tasted of pure vinegar. The sauce with the haddock was fine, and the mashed were nice, but that's all I have good to say about our experience.
Previous person said they got rid of their chef. Well I hadn't heard that, but it's a change for the better if this was the kind of food they put out consistently.Really had hoped this review was just re-opening jitters, but after going there myself, I doubt I will be back for a while.

I disagree with any bad comments on here. We ate at Johnny's Bistro early March 2009. I loved the food and the prices were very low for what we received! The portions were quite large for the price. We had the sauteed mussels, moroccan chicken salad, Crispy Duck Breast, and Shrimp filled Haddock. All were very unique, fresh, tasty, and similar to what you would expect at a high end restaurant. Someone mentions above not liking the vinegar in their side...that was my favorite item as it had a wonderful vinegar flavor. And the lentils were wonderful as well. Not overcooked into mush as you would hope :) Im guessing that person above eats at Subway alot and so its understandable that Johnny's Bistro may not be for them. The service was prompt and courteous. They have a nice quaint bar area in the room now were could relax and have your meal as well. We will definitely be going back!

The food has gone downhill these last two weeks and I don't understand? As a regular diner for the last couple of years, there seems to be a lessening of the quality of food. The service remains the same. I wonder what is going on? Our friends and family have noticed it as well and are considering going elswhere.

Hey, I just heard that the original chef (Rick Barbata) when it was Finch's is back. He was also the chef at Rick's on the hill. He is very talented and has an attention for detail like I've never seen or tasted before. I think there may be hope still...

We ate there this evening and thoroughly enjoyed our dinner! When we first arrived, there was no power due to an accident outide, but hey staff seemed to take as if it were a Top Chef Challenge. The power came back during our meal only after we were enjoying wine and a guinness. The foccacia is indeed fabulous and we got THREE offerings for refill of our bread. My husband very much enjoyed the salmon, I ordered and enjoyed the hanger steak and our 10 year old loved the special osf penne and shrimp. They absolutely DID NOT rush us and that happens frequently when dining with a youngster. We will continue to go back!

Poor quality food. I thought we would go and give it a try despite some of the postings. Our mistake, the food was less than stellar. The service was just fine. Obviously something is off in the kitchen.

Just to note - the chef has changed again as of a few weeks ago. There seems to be a revolving door of kitchen staff at this place.

WE were completely dissapointed. A Bistro & Bar? I would call it old folks hangout. No wonder the meals are soooo small with the crowd they get and the snotty wait staff can use some attitude checks. My wife ordered the haddock chowder and we are still looking for the HADDOCK!~!!! and the rest of the bowl full that you would think you shoud get. Don't even ask about the lamb buger, while it tasted great they need to call it mini burger.....for $10 you should get a burger and some fries, not the little fried string they try to pass off for fries. My advice is to eat before you go in then it won't seem like such small serving's. Thank god McDonalds is right down the street with a drive through because I was starving and the Mcdouble was way better than the lamb burger...Good luk if you dine here

I cannot believe he thinks he made a change...the "decor" is still frightening.. sooo outdated...those gold walls with that Italian mural??
It could be spare and chic, I would go there al the time
and the wait staff is literally un-professional. CLUE_LESS We really really need a place like the Johnny's it could be..He doesn't ask or follow up or feedback EVER!.. they all seem completely oblivious to what's going on. The hanger steak WAS NOT HANGER STEAK.. my date is an expert on meats, it was not. We sent it back. The lamb shank was soo delish we went back again to get it later in the month..it was totally different the second time. THEY NEED TO WORK ON CONSISTENCY and training. Johnny should do a little market research..he doesn't want to know what customers want.. I think he should invite some people in and ask..there is such potential! And we need another go to place in Falmouth!
