Almost every year my husband and I take a trip to Bermuda. While there, we always jump on the scooter and set out to buy two of my favorite Bermuda food items - Bermuda Rum Cake and Outerbridge's Sherry Pepper Sauce. Both can be purchased on-line, but when I run out, it sure does give us a good excuse to cross the Atlantic!
The Bermuda Rum Cake factory is on the Western tip of the Island, in the Dockyard. If you take a cruise to Bermuda, likely you'll dock at the Dockyard which is a
square filled with mostly tourist shops and galleries. The Rum Cake factory is among my favorites. I love to arrive just after the cake samples have been "misted" with rum to keep them moist. I always try a sample of each flavor, knowing full well that I will end up buying the Coconut cake to serve as one of our Thanksgiving desserts.
The City of Hamilton is where I make my other food-related purchase. Whenever I am on vacation I enjoy going into the grocery stores to see what sorts of food the locals buy. That's where I find the best deal on Outerbridges Sherry Pepper Sauce (tourists pay more than double when they purchase the sauce elsewhere). With less heat and more flavor than Tobasco Sauce, Sherry
Pepper is an essential ingredient in the famed Bermuda fish chowder
, though I use it most often to flavor tomato-based soups. It's a condiment I can't imagine living without. Of course, I can't go to Miles Market to buy the sauce without first stopping next door for a cone of homemade ice cream at Double Dip!
With the stringent "no liquids" policy on airlines, my stash of Sherry Pepper Sauce was confiscated at the airport on my last trip to Bermuda. I completely forgot about the policy and neglected to put it in my suitcase. Fortunately for me - and for those of you who may not be heading to Bermuda in the near future - you can purchase both the Bermuda Rum Cakes
and the Outerbridge's
sauce on-line.
