Brian Boru - Portland, Maine

With picnic tables, the smell of stale beer soaked into the wooden floors, and headbanging trash metal music blaring from the kitchen, Brian Boru leaves you disappointed if you're searching for a fun neighborhood Irish Pub.

Over the years, I've had several less-than-stellar appetizers when meeting friends for drinks at Brian Boru. Our latest dining experience - for lunch before the Home Show last weekend - will likely be our last.

My salmon sandwich, topped with olive tapenade and served on rustic bread ($10) was less-than-fresh. The oil used to cook the fish in my husband's Fish & Chips ($14) desperately needed to be changed. The batter was dark - almost burned - and greasy. Ditto for the hand cut fries which would have been better had they not been saturated in oil.

Bottom line: Go for the Guinness. Skip the food.

Ugh... that order of fish and chips looks absolutely repulsive! What waiter/waitress would look at that and think that its acceptable to pass along to a customer? Moreso, what cook/chef would dream of plating such atrocious-looking trash. Shame on you, Brian Boru!

I'd say you probably hit Boru on an off day. I've been a regular there for years and the food is usually much better looking and tasting than what you received. I guess off day would be putting it mildly by the looks of that fried fish. But yeah, give them a second chance. Things are usually much better.

Yeah you def hit an off day. Everytime I go there I get the fish and chips and it is always excellent. You need to give them a second chance.
